Patent Medicine Vendors’ Perspectives on the Role of Support in Implementing a Multi-Component Intervention in Urban Slums of Nigeria

The Health Policy Research Group, University of Nigeria, continues to partner with the Nigerian health authorities to prioritise healthcare in urban settings, particularly in urban slums. The CHORUS needs assessment found that Patent Medicine Vendors (PMVs) provide most primary care in the urban slums studied. The team implemented a multi-component intervention to strengthen the PMV service quality, referral practices and collaboration with primary healthcare workers, to strengthen the urban health system and overall quality of service provision in urban slums. The team explored the PMV’s perspectives on the role and impact of the support they received during the intervention implementation.

Iheomimichineke Ojiakor and colleagues highlight in this CHORUS Poster the need for continuous, multi-layered supportive supervision to improve PMV quality of care, to remain compliant with ethical practices and contribute meaningfully to the health of urban slum residents.
