Determinants of wealth related inequalities in mental health, Nepal

An intersectional lens is necessary to better understand the various factors affecting mental health. Parash Sapkota at HERD International presents on the determinants of wealth based inequalities in mental health: a decomposition analysis of nationally representative household survey data, made at the  11th National Summit of Health and Population Scientists in Nepal, in April 2025.

The study highlights significant wealth-related inequalities in anxiety and depression among Nepalese adults.  When segregated by place of residence, it is clear that urban areas show the highest inequality, suggesting that urban poverty exacerbates mental health disparities.  Addressing these disparities requires a strategic approach, taking a gender sensitive and intersectional lens, for equitable access to mental health resources.
